Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises (Kindle Edition)

Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises
Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises (Kindle Edition)
By Frank Ra

Review & Description

How to teach empathy in children? What is the difference between empathy and sympathy? “Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises “, based on "A course in Happiness", is a training in empathy for parents, teachers, educators, etc. who want to facilitate empathy in children. ”Empathy and Parenting: teaching empathy with children - Empathy training with empathy exercises” comes with selected empathy exercises.

While the way children understand the intellectual meaning, and implications, of empathy varies from case to case, a straightforward approach makes everything easier to relate to. For example, show a few pictures of people who clearly look happy, bored, suprised, etc and ask children to identify what these people are feeling. Then, show pictures of people waiting for a bus, looking at their watch, etc. and ask children to identify what these people are likely to be thinking. Then, just explain that is empathy: the capacity of understanding what other people feel and think. Explain that we all have this capacity for empathy, and that it gets better and better when cultivated with determination. Show pictures of happy kids in groups, playing together, listening to each other, etc. and explain that kids who are empathic are better at understanding their own feelings and the ones of peers, parents, teachers, etc. This resulting in people liking even more to communicate with them, at the advantage of everyone's happiness.

If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Adolescent Mental Health Initiative)
If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Adolescent Mental Health Initiative) (Paperback)
By Dwight L. Evans

Review & Description

While coping with teenage moodiness can be difficult under any circumstances, it can be especially challenging if a teenager has a serious mood disorder. This concise, readable book is the definitive guide to understanding and getting effective help for adolescents with depression or bipolar disorder, designed for parents and other adults in contact with afflicted teens. It combines the most current scientific expertise available today--including the newest treatments and medications and the latest research findings on mood disorders--with no-nonsense, hands-on advice from parents who have faced these disorders in their own children.
Among other topics, the book addresses the biochemical roots of adolescent mood disorders, the ongoing debate over psychiatric medications for young people, and practical strategies for helping a teen cope at home and at school. It concludes on a hopeful note, by reviewing the latest scientific evidence on methods of stopping mood disorders before they start or minimizing the risk of recurrence. A growing body of research now shows that early diagnosis and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder may reduce the severity of these diseases, both now and in the future. Including red flags to look out for and warnings on the dangers of doing nothing, this book will provide the information and tools parents need to help adolescents achieve the best possible outcome.

On the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series:
The Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series addresses some of the major mental health issues facing teenagers today--eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and schizophrenia. Of the dozen or so books planned for the series, the first four, including the two presented here, focus on how parents and other adults, including teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and even pediatricians, can help afflicted teens overcome the disrupting and often devastating challenges of these disorders. Each book is an authoritative guide that offers essential information such as how to go about getting a diagnosis, what the latest treatment options and prevention strategies are, how to help teens cope with mental illness at home and at school and, perhaps most importantly, what the warning signs and red flags are that parents and other adults should look out for in teenagers who may be at risk for these diseases. Combining the expertise of leading psychiatrists and psychologists with the experience of everyday people who have faced these disorders in their own children, the books are designed to help adults deal effectively with adolescent mental illness and to empower them to act immediately and wisely in getting teens the best available treatment possible.

I Thought My Father Was God CD (Audio CD)

I Thought My Father Was God CD
I Thought My Father Was God CD (Audio CD)
By Paul Auster

Review & Description

One of America's foremost writers collects the best stories submitted to NPR's National Story Project -- and illuminates the powerful role of storytelling in all our lives.

When Paul Auster was asked to join NPR's Weekend All Things Considered program to tell stories, he turned the proposition on its head: he would let the stories come to him. He invited listeners to submit brief, true-life anecdotes about events that touched their lives.

And so the National Story Project was born. It was one of NPR's most popular features. The response was so overwhelming, with more than 4,000 stories submitted that Auster decided to cull the top works and make them available in a book -- and now this CD collection. His selections -- hilarious blunders, wrenching coincidences, brushes with death, miraculous encounters, improbable ironies -- come from people of all ages and walks of life.

This one-of-a-kind collection is a testament to the power of storytelling that offers a glimpse into the American soul. By turns poignant, nostalgic, funny, and strange, it is an audiobook to be treasured and shared for years to come.

Review & Description

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment. This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr Read more

If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents (Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands' Adolescent Mental Health Initiative) (Paperback)
By Edna B. Foa

Review & Description

Growing up can be stressful for any teenager, but it is considerably harder for the many adolescents who develop an anxiety disorder. This book is an essential guide for parents, teachers, or other adults involved with teenagers who may e affected by these disorders. By bringing together two strands of expertise--that of mental health professionals and of parents who have lived through the experience of their own teenager's mental illness--If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder provides adult readers with the clinical information and practical advice they need to understand and help the teen. There are chapters detailing four the different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Each includes a clearly written definition, a discussion of factors that can contribute to developing the disorder, treatment information, and case studies based on a real family's own experience with the disease. Tips and quotes from parents are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, and helpful sidebars provide more detailed information. The authors also provide a chapter fully dedicated to discussing treatment options, including what role parents play in treatment, how to juggle treatment and school, and how to handle insurance and managed care issues. Knowing the right information about anxiety disorders is the first step towards helping adolescents who are dealing with them grow to become healthy, happy adults. Read more

In many instances it is not known what is the cause of colic or excessive gas in babies. Many European countries use gripewater, which has been known to ease a baby's discomfort due to colic, gas, hiccups or teething by acting as a digestive aid. Doctors and pharmacists in other parts of the world routinely recommend gripewater for babies with these symptoms. As the population of the country has become increasingly more diverse, this time-tested "old fashion treatment" has become more popular. Baby Bliss Gripe Water is a blend of healthy ingredients known to be beneficial for digestion, including fennel and ginger. Handed down from generation to generation, it has been used in many families for more than one hundred years. We Are Having a Baby and A Journey to Parenthood
We Are Having a Baby and A Journey to Parenthood (Kindle Edition)
By Beka Haverkamp

Review & Description

We Are Having a Baby is the captivating adventure of a couple's journey through pregnancy to parenthood. The story encompasses their hopes, fears, joys and funny moments - from soon after conception to the moment of birth. As the layers of this couple's love for each other unfold, you will witness the growth of another bond of love. Whether you have a baby, are pregnant, or are excited at the prospect of pregnancy - you will connect with this couple. Enjoy their 9-month trip, and share in the excitement of their final destination - the delivery room.

Remarkably, the entire story is written in Haiku poetry, creating a beautiful flow and continuity, using the rhythm of the words. The use of Haiku to create one lengthy story is truly unique. This is not Haiku in the old style, but the modern American style. However, the author has strictly adhered to the traditional format of three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

A Journey to Parenthood is your own special story. Simply use the questions and suggestions, in the second part of the book, to fill the pages that have been provided. With just a little effort, you will be amazed to see the personal story of your own exciting journey unfold. The journaling is easy and fun, and this book will become one of your favorite keepsakes, to someday share with your child.

This is a wonderful way to save precious memories, and it is the perfect gift for a baby shower, friend, family member, or for yourself and your baby.

The Virgin Diaries (Kindle Edition)

The Virgin Diaries
The Virgin Diaries (Kindle Edition)
By Kimberley A. Johnson

Review & Description

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY? Seventy-two men and women answer that burning question. Hundreds of years of collective experience answer the questions every virgin has. THE VIRGIN DIARIES is a book about sex that really isn't about sex at all. Rather, it's about the feelings associated with that first time: wondering about it, worrying about it, the expectations, the surprises and the disappointments. Within these pages are the recollections of seventy-two people, young and old, gay and straight, who responded to the call for answers. This candid collection of stories provides a unique opportunity to be a fly on the wall. There is no commentary. The stories stand on their own, allowing the reader to form his or her own conclusions. Whether you are a virgin and desire to make an informed decision, a parent faced with "the talk" or are interested in reading detailed accounts of one of life's most personal experiences, THE VIRGIN DIARIES offers confidential insights and illustrates the commonalities we all share: our hopes, dreams, fears and insecurities. It shows that we are all human and therefore, all connected.WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY? Seventy-two men and women answer that burning question. Parenting Books Guide: Quick Secrets for Parenting Toddlers, Easy Toddler Discipline Tips and Help for Toddler Behavior Problems (Kindle Edition)
By Monica McBride

Review & Description

So you think you weathered through the worst having nursed and cared for a colicky infant? You are probably looking forward to enjoying a restful sleep after seemingly endless months of waking up every 30 minutes or so. Well, you’re in for a surprise! As soon as your child hits the toddler age, you’re faced with a whole new set of challenges that will make 9 months of being pregnant seem like a walk in the park.

Make no mistake, parenting is profoundly rewarding. As your child turns two, you will no doubt enjoy watching your toddler knock out one milestone after another. At this stage, toddlers start to walk, talk, explore and discover the world beyond the safety and comfort of their parent’s protective embrace. They will also start to develop their own unique personalities and little by little start to assert their independence.

Stating that toddlers are a handful is a gross understatement. When you really think about it, it’s quite astonishing how a tiny child can effortlessly turn our worlds upside down and inside out.

Along with the immeasurable joy and sense of fulfillment, raising a toddler can also be extremely frustrating and exhausting. This book aims to provide parents a helping hand in weathering and making the most out of what is unarguably one of the most turbulent phases in child development. This book offers practical yet highly effective and time-tested tips, tricks, and valuable information on toddler rearing, helping frazzled parents maintain their sanity as they undertake one toddler issue after another.

Quick Secrets For Parenting Toddlers, Easy Toddler Discipline Tips and Help For Toddler Behavior Problems discusses positive parenting approaches in tackling different toddler issues -- from picky eating to potty training, from handling tantrums to teaching manners and instilling discipline at an early age. In this book, you will find a wealth of information to help you go through the overwhelming roller coaster ride of bringing up a child under 5 years old. This book serves as an ideal companion for parents negotiating the pleasures and perils of raising toddlers.

Toddlers can be overly demanding and draining. One minute they can be all sweet and cuddly but temperamental and unreasonable the next. Coping with the regular ups and downs can easily leave parents feeling confused, irritated and inadequate. This book provides effective ideas and fresh insights on handling common day-to-day problems faced by most toddler parents. It serves as a reliable guide on how to be a sensible and sensitive parent and teaches you how to best look after your child and yourself.

Veering away from the high and mighty, philosophical approach, you will easily experience a degree of warmth and understanding written by someone who possesses extensive experience in parenting and hands-on knowledge on typical toddler rearing dilemmas – giving priceless advice from one parent to another.

When it comes to toddler parenting, you definitely want to skip and avoid the trial and error part and handle your child the best way possible. After all, we only want the best for our children, right? This book will not only provide you tips on what to do and how to handle specific situations, but will also help you in building a strong and solid foundation for forging a nurturing parent-child relationship.

Be able to create and maintain that sane, peaceful family life by learning invaluable principles, techniques and strategies to raise your toddler in a happy environment. By raising a cheerful child, you will have more time to thoroughly enjoy every interaction and milestone throughout the toddler years. So you think you weathered through the worst having nursed and cared for a colicky infant?
