Adolescents at Risk: Prevalence and Prevention (Hardcover)

Review & Description

Seven million youngsters--one in four adolescents--have only limited potential for becoming productive adults because they are at high risk for encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities. This is one of the disturbing findings in this unique overview of what is known about young people aged 10 to 17 growing up in the United States today. The book explores four problem areas that are the subject of a great deal of public interest and social concern: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. In examining these problem areas, Dryfoos has three objectives: to present a more cogent picture of adolescents who are at risk of problem behaviors and where they fit in society; to synthesize the experience of programs that have been successful in changing various aspects of these behaviors; and to propose strategies for using this knowledge base to implement more effective approaches to helping youngsters succeed. Among the key concepts emerging from this study are the importance of intense individual attention, social skills training, exposure to the world of work, and packaging components in broad, community-wide interventions. Schools are recognized as the focal institution in prevention, not only in regard to helping children achieve academically, but in giving young people access to social support and health programs. The author also proposes comprehensive youth development initiatives at the local, state and national level, based on programs shown to be effective in real practice. This landmark, state-of-the-art study represents an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the welfare and current problems of youth, including psychologists, sociologists, school administrators, state and federal officials, policymakers, and concerned parents. The Medication Question: Weighing Your Mental Health Treatment Options (Paperback)

The Medication Question: Weighing Your Mental Health Treatment Options
The Medication Question: Weighing Your Mental Health Treatment Options (Paperback)
By Ronald J. Diamond

Review & Description

Helping readers understand the factors and considerations when deciding whether or not to take psychotropic drugs.

This important volume provides a thorough overview of a range of mental disorders, describing how they are affected by various medications and other interventions, to foster a strong alliance between family, patient, and clinician.

Diamond asks us to step well back from the brink of the "doctor knows best" mentality, addressing a more basic and radical question: Do I (or does my family member) really need medication, and if so, why, what, when, how and for how long? What is the problem for which I might be considering taking medication? Diamond faces the facts that some individuals do not benefit from medication, that taking medication regularly should never be the goal of treatment (as it often seems to be), and that medication in some conditions may have meaning and utility for the person even when there is no proven clinical indication for it.

This book is an invaluable guide to medications—including complementary and herbal products—that you might consider for various psychiatric and psychological conditions. Clinicians, clients, and family members alike will learn to collaborate, negotiate, create individualized treatment plans, and share in the decision-making process about whether to medicate or not. Kids on Meds: Up-to-Date Information About the Most Commonly Prescribed Psychiatric Medications
Kids on Meds: Up-to-Date Information About the Most Commonly Prescribed Psychiatric Medications (Hardcover)
By Kevin T. Kalikow

Review & Description

A popular guide for consumers about all the psychiatric drugs used with kids.

Arguments abound about whether psychiatric medicines are over- or underprescribed, even as their use in childhood and adolescence has become commonplace. Knowing how various medicines work, their side effects and doses, will help parents understand their child's experience. And if you are considering medication for your child, the crucial question is, could it help?

This book is an overview of the four groups of medicines most commonly used in child and adolescent psychiatry—for ADHD, depression and anxiety, psychosis, and mood disorders. It discusses not only the drugs but also how they work in the body, as well as the culture of today's medical practice. Kevin T. Kalikow offers measured advice on how to evaluate and treat young people with medicine and how to decide if medicine isn't the right course of action. It is essential reading for anyone who needs to wade through the complicated—and often contradictory—medical information about kids and drugs. Read more

The nuance of Ikerd’s lens combined with Logsdon’s translation into poetry and prose form a storytelling style that will both grip emotions and lift the spirit. PREFACE Youth is a novelty. As age holds its grip we look back fondly at who we think we were. Very rarely does the memory match our true past. Fantasies of relationships that were never meant to be, the loves that eluded our grasp, daydreams of people and places become more colorful and full as the years push them farther back in our minds. At a certain point in our lives the memories compete with the realities of the present. We begin viewing the world not in the memories of the past, but in the conclusions of the future. When the past and present merge with thoughts of what will be, we release ourselves of the confines of tainted memories and enjoy the freedom to view the world in a colorful light. 10 Ways of Developing Brain

Described by Dr. Eddy Supriyadi, SP.A, from Sardjito Hospital in Yogyakarta, there are two basic components in a child's brain development, which is a safe and positive experience.
When a baby is feeling depressed, the brain will respond by producing cortisol substances. High cortisol levels will slow the development of the brain.

Environmentally safe and comfortable baby might need to help brain development. Give a response when the baby crying and babbling.
Experience received each day will also help the brain development of children. Activities carried out in everyday life, such as taking children to the market or to the bookstore, said pediatrician graduates, it is very important for the establishment of networks of brain cell development.
Dr. Eddy provides 10 tips for parents to establish a baseline brain development of children:
1. Give care and a strong affection during pregnancy.
2. Give adequate nutrition. The first six months of life, give adequate nutrition with breast milk.
3. Provide a safe and comfortable environment for children.
4. Talk to your baby. Make eye contact when talking to children. Do not forget to always smile to the child.
5. When you have to entrust the child, look for high quality daycare.
6. Recommend a variety of music in children, and sing along.
7. Give a real interaction with the child for brain development. Do not let children watch television for too long. Limit the time.
8. Give space for children to interact with peers.
9. Relieve stress on parents. Parents who are experiencing stress tend to shift the stress to their children. When you feel stressed, try to tell people close to you.
10. Remember, the brain will never stop growing. So, give the children lots of stimulation continuously.

Pampered Moms

Pampered Moms

You need some relaxation, eh? Well you have come to the right place. Parenting is tough, for Mom and Dad, but for ladies to feel magnificent they need the pampering of a spa. Can't get that at home, can we? Now you can. Create simple indulgence with simple recipes that will pamper you and your skin. Look like a million bucks even when it's your turn to car pool the kids.
Let us begin. The number one mask recommended by some close friends of mine is the dry-skin mask. I find all of these ingredients already in my kitchen, and in a moment or two, I am pampering my skin like a queen.
You need: Six ounces of plain yogurt; one quarter cup finely crushed almonds; two teaspoons honey; two teaspoons wheat germ oil. Simply mix all of these ingredients together until you have a smooth texture to the mixture. Then apply, and rub gently, onto skin.
This will be the best twenty minutes you've had in a while, I guarantee.
To top off the lush, kitchen-aided experience I recommend soaking in a warm bath. Not just any bath, but a bath tub filed with soothing bath milk. Head back to the kitchen to explore for a few more ingredients.
In a large bowl mix one cup of honey; two cups of milk; one quarter cup of baking soda; and one cup of plain sea salt. Blend all of this together very well. Now, head to your nearest child-free bathroom and begin running yourself a so-hot-you'll-sweat bath (without scalding yourself, that's not pampering), as the water fills the tub pour the mixture under the running water. Now you will want to pour one half cup of baby oil into the water following the mixture, and if you desire, you can also add a few drops of rose water to create a heavenly scented bath experience.
You are a special lady, Moms make the world go-round.
With every passing day, as your kids begin growing up, you realize that the more you give to them, your husband, your friends, and your family, the less you find available for yourself. Remember, that when it comes to giving, you have to give to yourself before you will have anything worth giving to another. In a sense, fill yourself up to fullness so that you can over-flow in giving.

Welcoming a New Baby with a Personalized Baby Gift

Welcoming a New Baby with a Personalized Baby Gift

Is there anything as blessed as the arrival of a new baby? It is only natural to want to give a gift that is as special and memorable as this exciting time. One of the easiest ways to make a gift as special as the baby whose birth it celebrates is to choose a personalized gift to welcome the new life in our midst.
Personalized baby gifts are especially popular with new parents because they commemorate the care and love that the parents put into choosing the perfect name for their precious bundle of joy. Even a gift as simple as a wall plaque will be greatly appreciated because of the addition of the new baby’s name. If you are looking for a truly special personalized gift for a new baby, here are a few tips for making new baby gifts even more memorable.
One of the most classic new baby gifts is a pewter cup and spoon. A silver cup engraved with the new baby’s name is destined to become a family heirloom, but you can make it even more special by adding a few personal touches. Have the cup engraved with the baby’s full name and date of birth, and tuck some special keepsakes inside the cup before you give it. Put together a collection of crystals that represent your wishes for the child’s life (amber for intelligence, citrine for wealth and happiness, quartz for protection and clarity) and gather them up in a circle of tulle tied with a ribbon. Include a handprinted card explaining the significance and be assured that your gift will never be forgotten.
A personalized photo album is another classic new baby gift. Make your gift more special by adding the first few photos. It is easier than ever today with cell phone cameras. Make a point of getting photos with mom and dad together; the kind of photos that are hard to come by in the family album when either mom or dad is usually taking the pictures. Choose an album with a photo cover so you can insert the best photo you have of the new precious one and start the collection off right.

]]>

If you happen to be a family member or have access to mom and dad’s parents, you can add a truly personal touch to a photo album. Add mom and dad’s newborn pictures to the very first page of the photo album along with the photo of the newborn baby and make it easy for all those who want to play “he looks just like YOU when you were born!”
“Useful gifts” sometimes seem boring, but there are some baby accessories that mom and dad can always use. Blankets, for instance, are one thing that any new parent will tell you they never have enough of. Don’t just give a baby blanket, though, a beautifully made honeycomb baby blanket takes on the status of a family heirloom when you have it embroidered with the newcomer’s name and date of birth. Add a matching baby bottle and bib for a useful gift that will become a lasting memory.
When you choose a gift for the baby’s nursery, you are choosing a gift that will be seen every day, and become part of the baby’s memories forever. Wall plaques and picture frames are ever popular choices that are made even more special by the addition of the baby’s name and birth date. Cross stitch samplers are among the most popular new baby gifts, but if you do not have time or talent to cross stitch your own baby name memory, there are many beautiful wall plaques and embroidered wall hangings that can be personalized for you.
Beyond the nursery wall, there are other personalized gifts that babies and parents will love and appreciate. Stuffed animals and plush toys are another very popular baby gift – chances are that mom and baby will come home from the hospital with a dozen or more teddy bears and little pink and blue kittens and puppies. Make an impression with a different kind of stuffed animal; choose an adorable stuffed elephant with the baby’s name embroidered on his little pink ear.
Of course, there is always clothing, and babies certainly receive plenty of clothing gifts. Choose a different and unusual gift that will really stand out in a crowd like a pair of long johns in a bright primary color, with the baby’s name embroidered across the drop-hatch so you will always know who is crawling away. Absolutely adorable on their own, Grover, Cookie Monster, Diego or Dora can be added to the long-johns to make even more of an impression.
When choosing a gift for a new baby, always remember to check with the new mom and dad first to see if there is anything that is especially needed, or particularly unwanted. Once you decide what kind of gift to give, take a look at the special ways to personalize your gift and make it a lasting memory

This situation is even worse for mothers. If you are a mom and you have kids who are still babies or toddlers, it is very hard to leave them at home with no one to look after them. Some resort to leaving their kids in a daycare center or with a relative. This is not what most mothers wanted but many have no choice because they have to earn money for a living.

Baby Shower Best Bets - Gifts to Make Moms Smile (and Aunts Jealous)

Baby Shower Best Bets - Gifts to Make Moms Smile (and Aunts Jealous)

Most mothers-to-be end up surrounded by a cornucopia of lovely gifts in the wake of their baby shower. Invariably, all of those friends and family want to make sure that mom and baby are swimming in the latest infant raising technology (if it has batteries, it has to be good… Right?) Of course, not everyone will bring a gift that squeals, or lights up, or lights up and squeals. These are the folks who bring the pack and play, the changing table, the towels. You know, the practical baby stuff. These people are otherwise known as future grandparents. If you are heading to a shower sometime soon, why not be unique and impress the mother to be? Make those other guests WISH they had an ounce of your creativity.

Now, I've made my share of baby shower cakes, and there is always the gift basket option. A little something for baby and a little something for mom. There are quite a few places out there on the interwebs that offer these two alternatives pre-packaged, and with good reason as a LOT of people buy them. However, if you want to be different and give a memorable gift, a personalized piece of original art is both unique and thoughtful. It certainly shows that you're thinking outside of the little pink (or blue) box.

All over the web, artists are coming up with innovative new ways for parents to spell out their child's name, decorate their room, and even cover up that hole in the wall dad somehow made putting the crib together. Many of these independent children's artists inhabit websites like Etsy or have their own Yahoo Store. Many have our own sites, http://www.krankykrab.com is mine. Sorry for the shameless plug, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. Just about anything can be personalized to match the child's name (provided they've picked one) or the overall theme of the room or nursery. You can also find gift certificates so that after new mom and new dad decide whether it'll be John or Jon, they can send away for that memorable gift you got them.

Next on the list, how about something to spoil the new mom a little after the baby arrives, she's been through a lot after all. If she has a particular place she like to go to get her hair or nails done, get her a gift certificate. Don't forget about spa treatments either. After nine months of lower back pain, mommy could use a 'Me' day. Daddy can stay home and bond with the little one. Know what I mean?

The bottom line is, you shouldn't stress over what to get the new mom, just put yourself in her position and think about what would make you smile. There are a plethora of options to choose from that are original and different. Creative and thoughtful shopping ensures you'll always find the perfect baby shower gift!

The 1950s was a decade of big achievements. The dashing baby boy names and baby girl names of the joyful 1950s reflected an atmosphere of new expectations. The bold spirit of this new era held the belief that everything was possible. The world war was over, people were free, and the country was safe again.

New parents are often influenced by events around them when they name their new babies. This is particularly true for baby girls. Baby boys are more often named after family members such as their father, grandfather, or uncle. Baby girls have more of a chance to receive wonderful, fanciful names.

Among the new names that made it to the top 10 most popular were Mark, Deborah, Donna, Karen, and Debra.

The decade of the Fifties was a time of firsts. Sir Edmund Hillary was the first climber to reach the top of Mount Everest. Jonas Salk came out with the first vaccine against polio. In 1953, scientist, Rosalind Franklin, discovered the structure of DNA - the secret of life, itself. The Soviet Union launched "Sputnik," - the first vehicle to leave earth and venture into outer space. Closer to home, the United States expanded. Alaska became the 49th state, and Hawaii, the 50th.

In the meantime, Elvis Presley was making the hearts of lovers all over the world beat faster. "Heartbreak Hotel" was playing in homes, cafes, and nightclubs everywhere. Across town, "West Side Story" was a smash hit on Broadway and people couldn't stop singing "Maria." Leonard Bernstein was at the height of his power as a composer. The song, "In the Still of the Night," soothed everyone's spirits at the end of the day. Readers thrilled in the adventures of "James Bond" in Ian Fleming's novels, while moviegoers watched the handsome spy on screen. People's love affair with cars heated up. The 1954 Aston Martin DB-3/S took everybody's breath away.

Top 10 baby boy names from 1950 to 1959, in order of popularity, were James, Michael, Robert, John, David, William, Richard, Thomas, Mark and Charles. All are Christian saints' names and all of them go back in history for centuries as the names of emperors, kings, and nobles. These handsome names stand as pillars of Western civilization.

James (English) means "steadfast;" Michael (Hebrew) means who is like God;" Robert (English) means "brilliant;" John (Hebrew) means "honorable;" David (Hebrew) means "beloved;" William (English) means "staunch protector;" Richard (Germanic) means "strong ruler;" Thomas (Greek) means "twin;" Mark (Latin) means "combative;" and Charles (German) means "well-loved."

From 1950 to 1959, the top baby girl names took a totally new turn. Moms and dads felt it was time for a big change. The second world war was over and done with. It was time to clear the decks. Why not get away from the biblical names, as well as the names of empresses and queens, to say nothing of the heroines of old books? Their babies were children of a new world. What better time than now for thoroughly modern American names and their meanings.

The baby girl names, in order of their popularity, are Mary, Linda, Patricia, Susan, Deborah, Barbara, Debra, Karen, Nancy, and Donna.

Mary (Hebrew) means "spiritual;" Linda (Spanish) means "pretty;" Patricia (Latin) means" of noble birth;" Susan (Hebrew) means "lily;" Deborah (Hebrew) means "prophetess;" Barbara (Greek) means "unusual;" Debra (Hebrew) means "prophetess;" Karen (Greek) means "pure-hearted;" Nancy (Medieval English) is a pet form of "Agnes" meaning "generous;" and Donna (Italian) means "ladylike."

The beginning of the 1950s was like a dream. There was peace and there was plenty. Everyone thought this happy state would go on and on. But it was not to be. Once again, the world was badly shaken as the Korean War and the Vietnam War ripped through people's souls.

Still, the spirit of the people did not bend. There would soon be a new president, exciting job challenges, and big achievements to lift the spirit. Children with their dashing baby boy names and baby girl names of the joyful 1950s moved into the decade of the 1960s. And, their hearts were filled with great expectations.
