This compact guide offers 52 nature-focused explorations, adventures, observations, and games that can help you and your child connect to nature while living in the city. WHEN 13-YEAR-OLD JOSH finds out he has to stay with his dad in Chicago for a few months, he’s not too thrilled. But when he arrives at the airport, he’s simply devastated. His father—who used to be a scatterbrained, but pretty normal, shoe salesman—has become a sideburn-wearing, hip-twisting, utterly embarrassing Elvis impersonator. Josh is determined to keep his dad’s identity a secret, but on his very first day at his new school, a note appears on his locker. It’s signed Elvisly Yours, and instead of a name, a sneering purple smiley face. The secret is out, and when his dad is invited to perform at a special 50s concert at his school, Josh is forced to take drastic action. From award-winning author Shelley Pearsall comes a hilarious novel about a father and son discovering something about being who you are—and who you’re not. Read more

Review & Description

# Does your family live in conflict?
# Does your child have a psychiatric label (such as ADHD, oppositional defiance, conduct disorder, bi-polar disorder) or the behavior that would get him/her one?
# Have you lost (or nearly lost) control of your child?

If you answered YES to any of these three things, then PACT can help you as it has helped thousands of other families restore love and integrity to their relationships!

What Others Say About Got An Angry Kid? and The PACT Training Program

"The family is much calmer. Taking PACT Training was the best decision I ever made. It's the best hard work I've ever done. PACT was the light at the end of the tunnel for us."
--Ms. K. D., Willimantic, CT, Mom and Dad of an adolescent girl placed in foster care

"From my professional experience as a manager in the field, PACT is one of the very few services which has been held in high regard by our professional staff as well as the families which benefitted from Dr. Gibson's excellent program."
--Ms. Helen Lawrence (retired) Connecticut State Department of Children and Families (CTSDCF)

"I have had to fight for every service for my family. PACT is my best chance to [create] change. Thanks for everything."
--Ms. K.M., Vernon, CT, single Mom of an out-of-control son

"Although I was only a few weeks into PACT, I felt myself becoming calmer, more hopeful, and more in control. PACT is putting life into my parenting and does what three years of residential placement didn't."
--Mrs D.W., Hamden, CT, single Mom of a seriously emotionally disturbed boy

"Again, I can't say enough about how this program has changed my life."
--Mr. L.C., New Milford, CT, single parent of a foster child

"PACT and Got An Angry Kid? is brilliant."
--Parenting consultant

About the Author

Dr. Gibson earned his PhD in Education at the University of Connecticut in 1987 under the tutelage of Richard Bloomer. He poured everything about his childhood and his experience as a parent went into what became Parenting Angry Children and Teens (PACT) Training and the book, "Got An Angry Kid?" In 1993, the Connecticut State Department of Children and Families adopted the PACT methodology and since then 500 families have completed the year-long program with remarkable results.

The Light in the Leaves: a memoir about an American mother and daughter (Kindle Edition)

The Light in the Leaves: a memoir about an American mother and daughter
The Light in the Leaves: a memoir about an American mother and daughter (Kindle Edition)
By D. Horne

Review & Description

Set against the backdrop of the South, this is the memoir of a woman born into an emotionally-charged family at the end of the Baby Boom era. It's a fascinating view into the relationship between a mother and daughter through decades of personal transition and struggle. From the 1960’s through the death of her parents in 2006, this story touches on challenges women face every day and the joy to be found in strength and self-acceptance.

Beginning with the history of her grandparents in 1922, the author offers us the memories of her fragile existence as a painfully shy child who grew up to ultimately become a grounded, compassionate woman. Through her efforts to cope with bullying and childhood abuse, teenage pregnancy, and the difficulties of being a single parent, we follow as she learns to take control of her life and recognize her own strength. It's an interesting view into the dynamics between a mother and daughter who loved each other very much, but could not understand each other's choices.

Written from the perspective of an individual who found her own voice after years of self-doubt, it's a thought-provoking and compelling read. With blazing honesty, she tells of her journey to find autonomy and self-esteem while underscoring the inherent rights of women to make individual decisions. It's about the responsibility we all have to direct our own lives.

The author, D. Horne, invites you to follow her blog on the "Open Salon/blog/d_horne" web page.

Review & Description

Sam and Joy had been dating for about a year and were both attending college. Then Joy came to Sam with a strange request. She suggested that the two of them demonstrate how to make love in front of her best friend and roommate Marcie since she was inexperienced and wanted to find out what love making was all about.

This leads to some complications and before Sam knew it, Marcie had replaced Joy as his girlfriend. Then he found out that it had been a plot all the time since Joy was planning to switch colleges since she wanted to become a doctor. Since she didn't feel right about leaving Sam alone, she had fixed him up with her best friend.

Sam found out that Marcie was the perfect girlfriend since she ate lunch with him every day, then came over and fixed dinner for him and then spent the night, and fixed breakfast for him the next morning. She even cleaned his apartment. Soon they were living together. Unlike Joy, who was pre-med and didn't have much time to spend with a boyfriend, Marcie was a business major so had plenty of time.

Although Sam and Marcie got married, Joy still had strong feelings for Sam so she resurfaced later to cause problems. Joy slowly comes back into their lives and some unexpected things happen. Read more

Whether restricted by prison walls, the influence of others or held hostage by self-inflicted limitations, captivity starts in the mind. We allow our thoughts to create virtual restrainers that stifle our dreams and hinder our purpose.

Based on I Corinthians 13:12, Tainted Mirror An
Anthology will offer stories of hope and healing to
overcome the mental, physical and emotional
strongholds that keep us from fulfilling our destiny.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

The signs are everywhere: his obsession and feeling of kinship with wolves, werewolves and other monsters, his extra set of teeth, his sprouting body hair, his animal lust, his mounting rage against family, church, school and all other forms of confinement. At sixteen, he's staging clashes with the police, stealing cars, running away from home and into the arms of his forbidden girlfriend, Alice. The Home School Advantage: A Public Schoolteacher's Case for Homeschooling (Kindle Edition)
By John Evans

Review & Description

The Home School Advantage: A Public Schoolteacher's Case for Homeschooling is written by John Evans, a former public schoolteacher with 12 years of experience. Though initially skeptical of homeschooling, Evans explains how his thinking changed over the years. He addresses many of the common concerns of parents and shows how homeschooling can be a superior education choice for many parents. The author uses his experience in teaching his own son Clint at home to show the advantages of homeschooling. The book also responds to many of the common objections raised against homeschooling and also explores some of the special challenges that our public schools face. Evans shows how to gather great teaching resources, how to construct a successful lesson, and how to prepare the child for life after granduation. The Home School Advantage uses the author's own experiences and solid research to make the case that homeschooling is a valid option for many families. Read more

Ferdinand the Frog awakens one night to a very damp realization. Something doesn't feel right in his bed at all! What can the little guy do to fix the situation?
Luckily for Ferdinand, he has a friend who has experienced the same thing. Ferdinand learns that potty training is all about confidence. There seems to be one huge obstacle, however. Ferdinand is afraid of the sound the toilet makes when it's flushed.
In Ferdinand Uses the Potty, by Jay Tucker, our yellow frog friend faces his fear and he will encourage your child to do the same! Ferdinand Uses the Potty is wonderfully illustrated by award winning artist, D.E. West.

  • Straightforward potty training advice written in a fun format
  • Ferdinand's story will encourage your child to face his or her potty training fears head-on.

Acclaim for Ferdinand Uses the Potty
"Ferdinand Uses the Potty is a book that gives a fresh and humorous look at the topic of potty training for young children. Children will enjoy learning that their thoughts and feelings about becoming a 'big kid' are normal and real. Parents and children alike will delight in the amusing dialog between Ferdinand and his friend. This book will give parents the opportunity to laugh with their child and discuss how their child can become 'toilet ready' by listening to their mind and body."
--Allison Zaddach, M.E., Reading Education and educator of primary aged children

"As a clinical psychologist who works with children, I often encounter young people who struggle with the normal fears concerning toileting. Ferdinand Uses the Potty is a delightful tale that will entertain while helping children to feel more comfortable about potty training."
